Janurary 25 Meeting Summary

Congratulations to our club officers!  Our final club officers are shown below:

In addition, our president Justin gave us a brief lecture on how a 3D printer works (see diagram below).



1) SolidWorks/Inventor

You draw out your design or mold of an object in either SolidWorks, which is available on the computers in the computer lab (room 19-124), or Inventor, which is available for download as a student version (http://students.autodesk.com/).  Justin recommends you use Inventor because he is more familiar with that software and thus can answer your questions more effectively; but, SolidWorks is fine as well.  When you are done with your design, please save it as a .stl file.

2) ReplicatorG

You import your .stl file to ReplicatorG, a software that allows you to set the origin, scale, definition, and the orientation of your object.  ReplicatorG then exports the information to G-code, a machine language that tells the print nozzle of the printer where to go in a coordinate system.

3) 3D Printer

Lastly, the 3D printer prints out your object, according to the G-code given, by placing consecutive layers of plastic.

We are thinking of doing the following projects with the 3D printer:
- design a case for Arduino
- make club rings
- create rubber band propelled boats
- build towers that can support a weight on top
- enter a design competition on instructables (http://www.instructables.com/contest/up2013/?show=ENTER) We can win a 3D printer!

January 25 Meeting Preview

 Meetings will now be held on Friday at 2:00 pm in 19-042.

On Friday, January 25, we will be going over tentative guest speakers.

 

We are planning to invite Tim who is a materials engineer and Peter who is a civil engineer and a demolitionist.  If you have a guest speaker in mind or would like to see a guest speaker from your field of study, we would like to hear from you.  We would also like to know what topics you feel the guest speakers should address.

Some of the topics are below:
1) Experience:
          What is it like to work as an engineer?  What do you do everyday at work? 

 2) Internship:
          How do you get an internship?  What can I do to better my chances of getting an internship?

3) Academics:
        What was the experience as a four-year university or transfer student engineer?

In addition to going over guest speakers, we will be finalizing the club officers.

 

There are still a lot of positions to be filled (please see below), so make sure to come if you are interested in a leadership role.

It will be a short meeting; expect longer meetings in the future as we will work on projects. 

January 18 Meeting Summary

Hello everyone, welcome to CSM Engineering Club Spring 2013!

If you didn't have the chance to attend the meeting on Friday, January 18, you can come by 19-042 on Tuesday, January 22, at 1:00 pm.

The co-presidents of this semester are Chris and Justin.  More officers will be elected at a later date.

For this semester, we plan to purchase a MakerBot 3D printer at a discounted price, which will arrive around mid-February (please see picture below).



A 3D printer uses a digital model made within a computer-aided design/drafting (CAD) such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD to create a three dimensional solid object by laying down consecutive layers of plastic or other material (please see picture below).



We plan to explore more of 3D printing and create objects of our own.  We will also hold design competitions, go on field trips, and hear from guest speakers.

If you have an awesome design in your mind and wish to make it a reality, come join us!  Let us know what guest speakers you want to hear from and where you would like to go on field trips.  CSM Engineering Club is a group collaboration, and every opinion matters.
